Text: 2 Chronicles 25: 1- 28

King Amaziah was 25 years old when he began to reign over the Kingdom of Judah. He reigned for 29 years and died at the age of 54. He died at a very young age but asides his seemingly untimely death, he also did not end well. Let us look at the life of King Amaziah and learn some lessons from his story.

From the text, we can see that Amaziah’s problem started in verse 2; though he did good things, he did not have a perfect heart towards God.To have a perfect heart is to have an absolute conviction about God. King Amaziah’s conviction was situational and this caused a lot of problems that eventually led to his downfall and death. The imperfection of Amaziah’s heart was seen in the wrong decision that he made in verse 6 – He paid money to hire a hundred thousand soldiers from Israel to fight with him. Note that when God is not involved in a thing, you will foot all the bills yourself.

Note in Verses 7 and 8, God fights people who are disobedient to His will. When God is against you, nothing works for you. You cannot access God’s help if you are not ready to come to Him on His own terms.

Verse 9 – It does not matter how much you have invested into doing things, if they are wrong, you must turn back. Do not mind what you stand to lose because God is able to make another way for you.

Verse 14 – Amaziah brought back the gods of the Edomites because he was never fully convinced about God. When the prophet was around, he acted as instructed but when the prophet left, he did otherwise because he could not hold on to the faith.

Verse 15 – God does not like a second position. Entertaining thoughts against His will can trigger Him to anger.

Amaziah should not have died like he did.  He was a man of great potential but he blew it all away. Many of us think we know who we are and what we are capable of doing but we do not. Therefore, God needs to reveal to us the kind of hearts that we have or else we will destroy ourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5). When demands are placed on you, will you still hold on to the faith you have professed? You must be willing to go to any length to obey God’s commandments. You cannot obey God only when it is convenient for you. You must be willing to obey Him at all times.
