In the above scriptures, Jesus was not at that point talking to the multitudes, He was actually talking to his disciples. Likewise, God is personally telling us that we are set on a hill and as such we cannot be hidden. More importantly, this should be a perpetual thing in our lifestyle and not a periodic thing.
We are set where so many eyes are watching us. We did not place ourselves there, the placement is of God, as such we are accountable to him. His intention is for people to see His light in us and that His light will be communicated to them.
After our conversion to Christ, we are immediately set as a city on a hill. What then should be the concern of this city? Our concern should be to live a life that will please the person that set us there. Our light should so much penetrate into darkened lives and bring them to God.
Some people are watching our conversation, relational skills, and complete lifestyle to examine if it actually portrays our professions. Christianity is not just by mouth. It must reflect in our character that we are really following Christ. Therefore, we have to take heed of the way we live our lives. We cannot afford to live anyhow. When we speak, we should speak as an oracle. We should do everything as unto the Lord.
[biblegateway passage=”1 Peter 4:11″ display=”1 Peter 4:11″]; [biblegateway passage=”1 Corinthians 10:31″ display=”1 Corinthians 10:31″];
There are two sets of observers:
1. The ones who observe to imitate or to mock us
2. The Cloud of Witnesses
These ones are concerned about how we respond to the things of God. They are there to encourage us to finish strong. Setting us on a hill is also likened to setting us up for a spiritual race.
[biblegateway passage=”Hebrews 12:1″ display=”Hebrews 12:1″]
A city on the hill also means that we are set aside for God’s purpose and this requires us to walk with the Lord. Like Enoch, he walked with the Lord and God called him upright. God cannot refer to us as upright if there is no personal walking with the Lord.
[biblegateway passage=”1 Corinthians 9:24″ display=”1 Corinthians 9:24″]
To finish well, we need patience in our walk with God. The fruit of the Spirit is a result of a process, it does not come by impartation. We are naturally hasty, but it pays to be patient with the workings and dealings of God in us.

Jesus both referred to himself and his disciples as the Light of the world. Jesus and us are the citizens of this city. Being set on a hill means that we are no longer on the same pedestal with the world. We have been called out, therefore Jesus have placed us in a position where we can influence the world.
The Life Jesus came to give us is not similar to any life of any religious movement. Throughout the Old testament, God was interested in raising a separate people that will influence the world around them. The disciples were the first Church.
It is better not to have lit any lamp at all if it will be kept under a bowl. It is expected to be placed on a lamp stand where all can see. Islam and other religions are a kind of lights. There are various lights, but the Light of God in us must shine so bright that people would see and praise the glory of God. God should be praised by the revelation of the Light of God to people.
God has deposited so much to the ekklesia that they should invade the earth. This is the power of the church. It is a city, it is not a one man show. It is a city with a different light.
[biblegateway passage=”Mark 4:21″ display=”Mark 4:21″]; [biblegateway passage=”John 8:12″ display=”John 8:12″];
We are not just being called out for weekly meetings in church and for ourselves alone. Our life must manifest the Light of God, it starts from our rooms, hostels, streets etc. If we do not profit with what the Lord has given unto us, it would die. Do not despise the little light that the Lord has given unto us.
We are not ordinary!
