Ambition

There is nothing bad in being ambitious because ambition in itself is not wrong. The only issue God has with some of our ambitions is that they are birthed by the flesh. They come from the desire of wanting to make a name for ourselves here on earth, and when we have ambitions that are not in tandem with God, He will go against us (Genesis 11: 2 – 8).

Sadly, this is the present philosophy that is driving the world system today. As children of God, we must be able to identify what the overriding principle governing our lives is. Why do we do the things that we do? What is our life philosophy?

For David, it was to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life, beholding theLord’s beauty and enquiring in his temple (Psalm 27: 4).

For Jesus, it was to do the will of God the Father which can be seen in the way He lived His life on Earth here. He was not interested in building a name for Himself; all He did was aimed at revealing the Father (John 4: 34).

Paul was another example of someone who had ambitions that pleased God. Every decision Paul made was geared towards being accepted of God and not men (2 Corinthians 5: 9). He deliberately chose to live a life of discomfort just for the sake of the gospel (Romans 15:20). He knew how difficult it will be to preach the gospel of Christ where ithas never been preached before yet, he chose that kind of ministry.

So, the question to us again is this, “what is our ambition?” What do we hope for in life? We can not build our lives on other people’s ambition. We must have our ambitions, our reasons for living which must be reasonable.

God is particular about the kind of desires that we have and He does not want the devil to lead us astray. We endanger our lives when we do things just because we feel like doing them, irrespective of whether it is in line with God’s will or not. We should be interested in living our lives in a way that is right before Him, rather than trying to make a name for ourselves here (Matthew 10: 39).Remember, we as believers have only one destiny and that is God. Whatever we do on earth should be about Him.
