Characteristics of Sons

Fatherhood in the Church is based and resident in the local church. Fathers labour in words and prayers; they are discerners of gifts. He’s not the father who is not in direct contact with you.

There are no fathers without sons; sons are who they are because they are responsive to the fathers. The leading of the Spirit is not necessarily into places of comfort and convenience. This is because the whole idea of leading is to bring us into sonship and the process is not always rosy. Being led by the Holy Spirit helps us to build strength.

We are usually led by the Holy Spirit to do things we cannot do by our human strength.  One of the key ways sons honour fathers is by obedience. Fathers stake their lives on obedient children.

Ephesians 4:11 – Sonship is about maturity and it has nothing to do with age or longevity. Maturity comes with the ability to take on apostolic responsibilities.

Apostleship is a gift which is not limited to those who occupy the office of an apostle. Sons are apostolic by nature.

2 Samuel 5:1-10 – As brethren in the Church, we are bone and flesh of one another. God is taking note of the things we do and He will duly reward us even when we least expect it. When fathers are thirsty, sons give them water.

Isaiah 127:1-5; Psalm 110:1 – God is using sons to fight His battles. He wants to bring us to a place where He can be proud of our mighty acts on the earth. Sons recognize that service in the kingdom centre has nothing to do with personal agenda.

Joab killed Abner because he imagined that David’s kingdom was about personal agenda. He had a myopic idea of the workings of God, unlike David.

Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a clear understanding of how God sees kingdom issues. He was not bothered about being the next king after his father because he understood David’s place in God’s agenda. Brotherhood in the Church is not about lip service; it is a bond orchestrated by the Lord Jesus Christ.
