Text: Exodus 30:22-33; Acts 10:36-38; 1 John 2:18-28

In the Old Testament sense, anointing is a means by which priests, kings, prophets or things are made holy and set apart for God’s use. What is called the anointing according to Exodus 20:22-33 is carefully crafted such that anything it touches becomes holy. In the New Testament, anointing comes from the concept of charisma representing charm, favour, grace or presence that compels admiration.
The anointing and the Holy Spirit work hand-in-hand. In the Old Testament, we see the Holy Spirit coming on people as a result of anointing with oil (Isaiah 61:1-11, 1 Samuel 15:11-13). In the New Testament, the anointing is a direct outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Exodus 29:7; Joel 2:28).
Through the anointing, we receive the Holy Spirit who enables us to manifest Kingdom power in healing the sick, delivering the oppressed and enlightening the ignorant. We see the ultimate example of the anointing in Jesus who is the Messiah/Christ-“The Anointed One” (Luke 4:18).
There are certain things meant to be done by us and that is why we receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit for empowerment. The anointing makes us trees of righteousness (Isaiah 61:3). The anointing makes us light in the world which is full of darkness; light makes more sense when there is darkness. God has placed us here at this time that we may influence our world. We are supposed to be nation builders. The anointing was given to us so that we can bring glory to God.
The knowledge of God is the means by which we acquire Kingdom power; the anointing is the means by which we acquire knowledge and ease of understanding as the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth (1 John 2:20,27). We have answer to every question because we have the Holy Spirit in us. When we do not know a thing, it means we have not been careful enough to listen to the Holy Spirit, the Holy unction within us.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
We partake of the anointing of Christ because we follow Him. The power of the Kingdom is activated by the knowledge of God and this knowledge can only be accessed through the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 23:5; 45:7; Isaiah 10:27
To be anointed is to grow fat. We can grow so fat in grace that bonds of wickedness can no longer hold us down. When we grow to a level in the Spirit, certain yokes will break off of their own accord (Isaiah 10:27) because the anointing is supposed to affect every aspect of our lives (James 5:14).
Psalm 35:7; Isaiah 25:6
Anointing with oil represents generous provisions that cannot be stopped by adversaries. God desires that we enjoy his gracious supplies; He wants us to enjoy fatness from His royal feast.
James 5:14; Mark 6:13
Anointing with oil still has a place in the New Testament; it is a means of getting sick people healed. It should however be noted that it is not about the oil but about faith in Jesus. In Mark 6:13, we saw how anointing rested on substances but our faith must rest in Jesus and not in the substances.
The anointing confers so much power on us that we become untouchable for the enemies. In Psalm 105:13-15, it is clear that we are guarded and protected because of the anointing. The anointing makes tremendous kingdom power available to us.
